Beer in short supply in Tokyo region due to quake, power outages
TOKYO, April 7, Kyodo
Beer is running short at some retailers in the Tokyo metropolitan region as brewers struggle with damage to their factories and power outages caused by the March 11 quake and tsunami that ravaged northeastern Japan.
Among major brewers, Sapporo Breweries Ltd. and Asahi Breweries Ltd. each had two beer factories damaged by the disaster, including ones in eastern Japan, while Kirin Brewery Co. had a manufacturer of materials for its beer cans affected as well as its Sendai factory in hardest-hit Miyagi Prefecture.
Sapporo, whose Chiba factory serving the metropolitan area suffered along with its Sendai factory, has begun bottling and canning beer produced before the quake but has been unable to restart the process of preparing ingredients for brewing, its official said.
