You and Tequila

As often happens here at S&B, the stories come in in batches….so after the new song “Whiskey”, we now have Kenny Chesney & Grace Potter singing “You and Tequila”.

I wonder what will be the country song (I told you I was turning into a convert) that finishes out the trifecta.

Enjoy

WINNER

So far, this year has been dragging.

Obviously with economy, nobody has the kind of money we would like to buy smoke or booze…so that has been rough.

Throw in the crazy weather (leaving us snowbound and without Propane because we couldn’t get a delivery), getting thrown out of a bar during the Super Bowl (I don’t care if his niece was in the show…Halftime sucked) and now I’m heading to LA.  We needed a shift in luck.

Well, it came.

Starting with Thompson Cigar.  You might recall THIS post where I invited the readers to “Like” a comment I made on their wall.  Well, you guys didn’t disappoint, and we crushed the competition with 18 “Likes”.  Tomorrow, Simon and I will draw the lucky name for the Gift Code….but in the meantime, take a minute to thank the sponsor Thompson Cigar Company by visiting their site and making a purchase.

Thompson Cigar

All last week we had been doing good on the blog with viewers.  On average, get get between 100-125 unique hits a day.  Then came THIS story about Diosa Tequila.  Our hits went through the roof, with a total of almost 800 in one day alone.  I’ve requested samplers of the tequila for review, and I am really looking forward to see if the product is worth the hype.

So, things are really looking good going into Sunday….so I accompany Debi to go play Bingo.  I know, I know….Bingo?  She likes it, and it is at the local VFW….so I can get beer and try out my new “club” membership.  The outcome…Debi hits $120 and I hit $40.  EXCELLENT.

Going into my last work day before my trip to LA, I was thinking things couldn’t get better.  Then I check my Email.

Congratulations!  You are the winner of Four Roses: The Return of a Whiskey Legend at Tribute Books Reviews and Giveaways.

Tribute Books has giveaways if you spread the word for them.  You should check out their site and sign up.  HERE was my original tweet.

Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally, I went out and checked my mail….lo and behold, I received a sampler box from JD CIgars of their Temptation Line.  I have died and gone to heaven.  I’ve been waiting for these for awhile and I am looking forward to them kicking off sales.

Overall, things are starting to look up……and I want to personally thank all the Sponsors, Contest Holders and my wife for turning this year around.

As Charlie Sheen would say WINNER

Cheers

A Bloody Debi

HA, that name sounds hilarious….but the end product was really good.

This weekend, Debi was making Salsa.  You see, we focused our garden this year on ingredients to make Salsa and Tomato sauce.  Everything is really easy to grow and both are things that we enjoy (although Tomatoes by themselves are the spawn of Satan).

I digress.

Anyway, one of the by products of her seeding and peeling the tomatoes was all the juice.  This time around, she captured it and strained everything, but what to do with it.

At first she thought Bloody Mary Mix, and I think that was her goal when setting out, however what she made was fairly spicy and so the idea sprung to put Tequila in instead of Vodka.

Thus, a Bloody Debi was born.

Her mix consisted of Garlic, Tomato by product, Hot Sauce (Old Missouri Bushwhacker Brand – General Shelby’s No Surrender_, part of Jalapeño, and salt/pepper (am I missing anything?)….all blended well together.

Add to a glass of ice and Herradura Blanco Tequila (brought to you by some vampire novel Debi likes) and you have an interesting and refreshing drink with lots of bite.

She might swing me to Tequila yet.

Cheers  :)

Cinco de Mayo is coming

It’s that time of year again, Cinco de Mayo (5th of May).  A time where Americans look for any excuse to drink.  Much like St. Patrick’s Day, New Years and the 4th…this is a holiday primarily for adults, and a themed reason to drink tequila….yet there is so much more to the date.

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a holiday celebrated in the United States and primarily limited to the state of Puebla in Mexico. The holiday commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.

Cinco de Mayo is not "an obligatory federal holiday" in Mexico, but rather a holiday that can be observed voluntarily. While Cinco de Mayo has limited significance nationwide in Mexico, the date is observed in the United States (also voluntarily) and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.  Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day, which actually is September 16, the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.

In America, this translates to a trip to the local Chi-Chi’s or Mexican Restaurant and another Amateur Night where people who don’t normally drink consume mass amounts of Cheap Tequila (Jose Quervo).

While I could care less about Mexican Politics (Remember the Alamo), I always love a good reason to drink…so let’s examine some recipes you can use at home.

In the article “Tequila, a Cinco de Mayo must” , there are several good recipies to try:

Margarita

1-2 ounces of tequila

• 1 ounce of Cointreau or triple sec (orange-flavored liquor)

• Almost an ounce of fresh-squeezed lime juice

• Top off with sour mix or soda water

Shake ingredients with ice and strain into a cocktail glass rimmed with margarita salt.

The Rockin' Paloma

Mixologist Alex Straus designed this fresh cocktail for Cabo Wabo tequila.

• 2 ounces Cabo Wabo Reposado

• 1/2 ounce fresh-squeezed lime juice

• 6 ounces grapefruit-flavored soda

• splash of grenadine

• 1 cucumber

Muddle three cucumber slices with tequila and lime juice. Shake with ice, then add soda and shake more. Strain over fresh ice in a tall glass with a salted rim. Drop a splash of grenadine on top (don't stir it in) and garnish with a cucumber slice.

Blazin' Shooter

This shot could also be called "the mistake."

• 1 1/2 ounce of blanco tequila

• A few dashes of hot sauce

Add a few dashes of hot sauce to the bottom of a shot glass. Add tequila and garnish with a lime wedge.

Of course, if Tequila is not your forte….there are several Mexican Beers as well, just stay away from the Corona….it doesn’t get more cliche than that.

I told you drinking Tequila was good for you

An ingredient found in the Tequila plant could help fight diseases like Osteoporosis.  They're called fructans a non-digestible carbohydrate found in the agave plant, which is the source for tequila.

Experimental studies show the ingredient could reduce the risk of not only the bone disease, but diabetes as well.

As a result, researchers with Mexico's National Polytechnic Institute believe the agave plant could ultimately supply a healthful food additive by adding it to foods like ice cream.

The Highland Margarita

I was going to append this to my How to Celebrate Margarita Day, but then thought...hell no! Anything called a Highland Margarita deserves it's own thread.

Cheers

Highland Margarita recipe

1 1/2 oz Tequila
1/2 oz Grand Marnier orange liqueur
1/2 oz Laphroiag Scotch whisky
sweet and sour mix

Pour the tequila, Grand Marnier, Drambuie and sour mix (to taste) into a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice cubes. Shake well. Pour into a salt-rimmed margarita glass, garnish with a slice of lime, and serve.

How to celebrate Margarita Day

Happy Margarita Day!

Who knew? I didn't. I figured Margarita Day would have been around the 4th of May.

Here are some ways to help celebrate....although I will probably stick to the classic.

Poor Man's Margaritas

Ok, I'm getting ready for bed and I realized I had an ommision in the review of last night.

I covered everything at Paddy Malone's, but then there was the ride home. Jason and I were in the backseat rambling on about how we needed more booze. Jenn was hungry and Debi was tired (still worn out from her bout with H1N1).

It was determined that we would just get dropped off at home and Jenn/Jason would grab some chow in Columbia.

Being the enabler that I am, as soon as we got home....I threw together a quick drink for me and Jason. One I called....the Poor Man's Margarita.

Now keep in mind, I had limited resources to work with....ie, we were out of booze and beer, except for two types of Tequila and a bottle of white wine.

So, thinking quick...I poured a double Milagro, threw in some cubed ice and topped with Mt. Dew.

It actually (in my drunken state) wasn't bad......but was Jason a bit to full to handle it? It was that or the BK. Inquiring minds want to know.

Cheers
